Merck is a global science and technology company focused on Healthcare, Life Science and Performance Materials.

The organization's IT area has an information system that manages its projects and the activities that make them up. At that time, they had difficulties to carry out adequate monitoring and control, since the system did not correctly handle all the eventualities that could arise, such us cancellations, extensions, suspensions, among others, and how to return to normal or cancellation states, for example, in the life cycle of an activity or project.

In the discipline of Software Architecture, there is a tool called State Machine Diagram (SMD) that allows solving these types of problems.

After a detailed analysis of the business situation, the SMD for the Project and Activity entities were developed. Likewise, the indicator "Project Health" was created based on the project’s status and proposed completion date.

Before

The system did not correctly handle the different business situations that could arise in the life cycle of an activity or project.
The difficulty was that there were many possibilities and an approval flow with applicants and approvers.
There were also status changes due to other business rules such as project’s inactivity.

The SMD for the Project entity was created.
The SMD for the Activity entity was created.
Each SMD considered approval flows, statuses, information system actions and business rules.
The indicator “Project Health” was created, whose values are “Normal” or “Delayed”
