Project: Information System for Inventory, Assessment and Economic Valuation of Natural Heritage

MINAM is a government institution that promotes and ensures the sustainable, responsible, rational, and ethical use of natural resources and the environment that sustains them.

To strengthen and develop the capacities of authorities and public officials in Inventory, Evaluation and Economic Valuation of Natural Heritage, it is decided to develop a computer application as a tool for planning the development of Peruvian State’s natural resources.

Under the umbrella of a company specialized in economic matters and with the assistance of specialists in natural resources and systems engineering, an information system was developed to automate the work of researchers and professionals in natural sciences.

If we consider that a forest engineer, after completing his career, specializes in ONE species of tree, for example, and that to inventory the "individuals" in a portion of the territory he must resort to techniques and methods typical of his specialty, then we will be able to glimpse the difficulty of inventorying and calculating the economic value of a multitude of species and natural resources that exist in any given geographic area.

Before

MINAM, as the governing body of the Environment sector, sought to provide regional and local governments with a tool that systematizes the preparation, dissemination, maintenance, and integration of evaluated and valued inventories of natural resources, in coordination with the competent authorities

After

An information system was developed and put into operation that allowed the following to be recorded:

  • Economic Valuation Studies, with their respective attributes: researcher data, geographic reference, details of valued natural resources, among others.
  • Inventory and Evaluation Studies, with their respective attributes: general data, geographic reference, ecoregion, methodology and planning, among others.
  • The system also allows recording the detail of the inventory of Flora and Fauna with their corresponding scientific and methodological attributes of collection and characterization, by species.
